K-BEAUTY ROUTINE ORDER
Do you use toner before or after serum?
It’s a simple question with a surprisingly useful answer. Because once you understand texture, active placement and a few common exceptions, layering your routine becomes effortless (and your skin gets way more out of it).
The short answer
Toner → Serum (usually)In most routines, you apply toner before serum. Toner is usually more watery and acts like a prep step: it rehydrates, softens the feel of skin after cleansing, and helps the next layers spread more evenly.
Rule of thumb: apply products from thinnest → thickest (texture-wise). This supports comfortable layering and helps your skin “drink” each step rather than having thicker layers block lighter ones.
A classic Korean routine order
Double Cleanse → Toner → Essence → Serum → Moisturiser → Sleeping Mask
Not everyone does every step every night. The “K-Beauty way” is more about choosing the right layers for your skin that day. When your skin is dry or tight, toners and essences matter a lot more than people realise.
Where toner fits (and why it’s worth it)
Hydration + prepA hydrating toner goes on after cleansing to deliver water-based hydration fast. Then serums can focus on targeted concerns (glow, texture, well-aging). If your skin ever feels “tight” after washing, toner is often the step that makes the rest of your routine feel instantly better.
When NOT to apply toner first
There are a few common exceptions where a serum (or “first-step” product) is designed to go on immediately after cleansing. In those cases, the product is formulated to be your first layer; so follow the brand’s directions.
Exception 1: First-step serums
Some products are literally made to be applied right after cleansing (before toner), like certain “activating” serums. Example: Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Serum.
Exception 2: Pure Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid)
Pure Vitamin C can be tricky for stability and penetration, so some brands recommend applying it to clean, dry skin first. A simple approach:
- Cleanse;
- Apply Vitamin C (thin layer), let it settle;
- Continue with toner and the rest of your routine;
Vitamin C derivatives (like Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate) are usually less fussy, so they’re often easier to layer after hydrating steps.
Exception 3: When your skin is irritated
If your skin is sensitised (over-exfoliation, weather, travel), you might skip “active-first” steps entirely and keep it simple: toner → barrier serum → moisturiser. Calm first, glow later.

Takeaway
Most of the time: toner goes before serum. The main exceptions are “first-step” products and certain actives (like some pure Vitamin C serums). If you’re ever unsure, follow the product directions and let texture guide the rest.
